What is Cordyceps Militaris?
Militaris is a species of cordyceps mushroom. Militaris and sinensis are the most popular species for supplementation. These parasitic mushrooms grow while feeding on hosts. This produces the signature elongated, fruiting body.
Cordyceps Extract vs Just a Powder
If the mushroom or plant supplement you are buying does not specify any ingredient as a standardized extract, then you are getting a fraction of the potency (and likely overpaying). Standardized extracts are tested to ensure active ingredient(s) comply with a minimum specification. In this case, the cordyceps extract is standardized for a minimum of 25% beta-glucans.
Cordyceps Sinensis vs Cordyceps Militaris
Cordyceps Sinensis – Despite sinensis being present in more supplements (likely due to being cheaper to produce), this name is no longer relevant as almost all products marketed as cordyceps sinensis are not actually cordyceps. Real cordyceps sinensis sells for tens of thousands of dollars per kilogram. You can read more about this clarification from Nammex, the manufacturer. Most sinensis products are actually CS-4, which is a manufactured strain using fermentation.
Cordyceps Militaris – This version of cordyceps is cultivated from organic 100% whole fruiting bodies. Nammex brand militaris contains cordycepin and beta-glucans. Cordycepin is primarily responsible for the mood health benefits of cordyceps militaris.
How can you tell the Difference?
If the vendor will not specify which species, or if you suspect a vendor isn’t truthful about the version of cordyceps, a starch test will sometimes reveal cordyceps sinensis due to sinensis being grown on grain.
